Alzheimer’s is a disease that effects brain and is the most common form of dementia. It destroys a person’s memory and their ability to learn and because sufferers are most usually the elderly the symptoms can be difficult to detect as they are as common as simple forgetfulness.

A recent study (Sept. 2006) published by the Columbia University Medical Centre in New York has touted the positive effects a Mediterranean diet has on the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Inhabitants of the Mediterranean rim have less incidence of the disease than those of other parts of continental Europe and the rest of the world. Researchers at Columbia university believe this can be attributed to their diet.

The Mediterranean diet

A typical Mediterranean diet centres around fresh fruits and vegetables, a small amount of red meat and dairy, and of course, olive oil. Although researchers are unsure of the reasons why a Mediterranean diet lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s it is thought the antioxidants and polyphenols present in the diet work against oxidative stress associate with brain cell damage.

Oxidative stress is the result of oxidation on the tissues of the body, which basically cause the breakdown or malfunction of bodily tissues. All tissues of the body are susceptible to oxidation which occurs as a result of our lifestyle, diet and the aging process.

The benefits of Spanish olive oil

Olive oil is a well-documented source of both polyphenols and antioxidants that can assist in combatting this oxidative stress causing Alzheimer's disease. The properties of Spanish olive oil make it the best olive oil in the world over, with the finest pure quality oil available. As well as high levels of these healthy constituents, Spanish olive oil is also full of rich flavours and aromas that enhance the flavours of your meals. For example Spanish olive oil improves the flavour of steamed vegetables increasing the likely hood you’ll eat more vegetables during each meal. You not only benefit from the healthy properties of Spanish olive oil but the likely increase in your consumption of vegetables means you also benefit from the healthy properties of these foods also.

A separate study has also shown that a similar diet can also assist in the management of the Alzheimer’s once it has been diagnosed.
