Cancer is one of the chief causes of death in the developed countries, and its incidence is on the increase. Cell oxidation is one of the major risks in the formation of cancer. Cell oxidation can result in the development of free redicals which effect cell develoment. The greater the amount of free radicals in your system the more susceptible a cell is to developing cancer.

Diet has been shown to play a crucial role in lowering the risk of a large number of cancers, particularly foods that contain antioxidants to slow the oxidation process. The types of cancer most closely associated with diet are colon-rectal, prostate and breast cancer.

Diet a key factor

Recent research has revealed fat content is one of the key factors in a healthy diet and that the type of fat in the diet seems to have more implications for cancer incidence than the quantity of fat. A diet high in saturated fats will contribute to the oxidation process whereas a diet that includes unsaturated fats, containing antioxidants, will combat the oxidation process. Spanish olive oil contains a highest level of monounsaturated fats in any vegetable oil, making it the healthiest choice for your diet.

Factors effecting cancer

Cancer is the development of abnormal cell growth due to mutations that occur because of the existence of toxins in the body. The toxins can enter the body via diet or lifestyle choices such as alcohol, drugs, excessive sun exposure and smoking. Once in the body the toxins can form into ‘free radicals’, which are unusual atom chains that effect cell growth and development through oxidation.

To combat the free radicals and oxidation process studies have shown a diet high in vitamins and antioxidants can assist this process. The role of olive oil in delivering these chemicals is two-fold.

Antioxidants in olive oil

Spanish olive oil contains vitamin E and polyphenols that are known antioxidants that suppress the free radicals and oxidization process. What’s more the vitamin E in Spanish olive oil is fat-soluble, which means it can be stored in the body.

The monounsaturated fats in Spanish olive oil are made up primarily of oleic acid, which is thought to contribute to the prevention of colon cancer. Plus other chemicals such as flavenoids and squalene are also being studied on their positive effect of lowering the risk of cancer.

Cancer prevention

As discussed earlier, to combat the free radicals and oxidization process in cancer, studies have shown a diet high in vitamins and antioxidants can assist. Olive oil can play a key role in delivering a healthy balanced diet when used as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
